"The Australian" apologises.

On Friday August 5 Ean Higgins, a journalist at The Australian, contacted the Australian Climate Commission on the premise that he wished to interview myself and other scientists for 'an intelligent' article on sea level rise. I spoke to him for around 30 minutes, giving details of both the IPCC projections on global sea level rise, the Federal government's policy position, and the work of the Federal government's coastal committee.

Nuclear Power ?

The issue of whether nuclear power has a role in the future energy mix is often raised by climate sceptics. Their objective may be to divide the environmental community, or to ‘test’ the rationality of the speaker. I’ve been accused by many climate sceptics and other critics for changing my stance on nuclear power. Around 2006 my thinking on the issue crystallised, and since then I’ve advocated the same position, which is essentially as follows.

Should the lower Murray Barrages stay or go?

Jennifer Marohasy has been arguing for a number of years that the barrages near the mouth of the Murray should be opened, allowing seawater to enter the lower lakes. This, she says, would solve some of the Murray’s problems such as the development of acid-sulphate soils in the lower lakes. The main benefit she cites, however, is that were the river allowed to run dry in its lower portion, more water would be available to irrigators upstream.
